The Humble Choc Chip

 Chocolate Chip

Well folks, I thought I would start off simple with the absolute staple that is the humble chocolate chip cookie!

I really don't like it when recipe blogs include lots of writing before the recipe so I think I'll cut right to the chase.

Ingredients

190 grams plain flour
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon fine sea salt
114 grams unsalted butter, at room temperature
50 grams granulated sugar
123 grams light brown sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 large egg, at room temperature
180 grams chocolate chips (I chose milk)

Method

Preheat oven to 180ºC. Line baking sheets with parchment paper.

In a medium bowl combine the flour, baking powder, and salt.

In the bowl beat the butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until creamy, this should take about 2 minutes. Add the vanilla and eggs, beat again until smooth. Gradually sift in the flour mixture. Stir in the chocolate chips.

If you have the time, wrap dough in cling film and keep in the fridge for at least 24 hours but no more than 72 hours. This makes the cookies thicker. Let dough sit at room temperature just until it is soft enough to scoop.

Divide the dough into the desired sized balls and place on prepared baking sheets.

Bake for 11-13 minutes, or until golden brown. Cool for 5 minutes before removing to wire racks to cool completely.

My Thoughts

In short, this recipe made the quintessential chocolate chip cookie. It created the perfect balance of sweet and salty, the gooey middle but crispy exterior. Everything I want in a cookie.

Much joy was brought to me while making these cookies, hopefully this has made you want to make this recipe too - I highly recommend. I made 9 decent sized cookies with some cookie dough left over to freeze for another time. You can substitute the milk chocolate for other chocolate - but before you ask, no, raisins do not belong in this recipe (nor any cookie recipe for that matter).

Please comment and let me know how this recipe worked out for you!
